Introduction to Dataverse
One of the most robust backend solutions common to all Power Platform tools is Dataverse. This is a unified Microsoft data storage platform that provides a centralized and scalable infrastructure for storing and managing data used by various applications and services on the Microsoft Power Platform.
In itself, this ease of integrating data from various applications into a database capable of designing relational data models would be a powerful argument for its adoption. However, Dataverse offers a number of interesting features, such as:
Easy to manage - Data and meta data are stored in the cloud. No need to consider storage details.
Secure - Data is stored securely so that users can only see it if they have access to it. Role-based security allows you to control access to tables for different users in your organization.
Access your Dynamics 365 Data - Data from your Dynamics 365 applications is also stored in Dataverse, allowing you to quickly create applications that use Dynamics 365 data and extend applications with Power Apps.
Advanced metadata - Data types and relationships are used directly in Power Apps.
Logic and validation - Define calculated columns, business rules, workflows and business process flows to ensure data quality and drive business processes.
Productivity tools - Tables are available within Microsoft Excel add-ins to increase productivity and ensure data accessibility.
So what exactly is Microsoft Dataverse?
Dataverse is a secure database that has been designed to eliminate much of the complexity behind setting up a database. Think of Dataverse as a Low/Code database.
It allows you to create tables and relationships between these tables. It also creates a series of common standard columns automatically in the tables, for example:
- Created By
- Created On
- Modified By
- Status
Dataverse also comes equipped with a series of pre-configured tables with automatically created columns, views and forms. You can create applications, automation flows and reports that can access the data managed centrally in Dataverse.
